Who we are
We are the Cub Scout packs and Scout BSA troops of West Hartford. What does that mean? It means we are:
- A youth program open to all youth, grades K-12,
- Run by parents and volunteers for the benefit of the youth,
- Focused on teaching civic engagement, life skills, leadership, and character
- Through a fun and exciting program focused on outdoor skills, practical skills, and adventure
By joining one of our units, your child will become part of a group of youth who work together to climb mountains (figuratively and literally), achieve self-reliance, and contribute back to the community (all under the watchful eyes of the adult leaders, of course).
Open to everyone
Both Cub Scouts and Scouts BSA (formerly called 'Boy Scouts') are open to all youth regardless of gender, orientation, residence, religion or religious affiliation, or (dis)ability. There are age limits:
- Cub Scouts is open to youth in grades K through 5, and
- Scouts BSA is open to youth ages 11 through 17 (and longer, in special circumstances due to disability).
However, former restrictions on gender and orientation have finally been rescinded. All units are open to residents of every city or neighborhood; you do not need to join 'your' neighborhood's units. (There may be advantages to doing do if your child has friends there, but you a free to join any unit you wish.) Lasly, BSA programs include 'reverence' as an element of character to be built, but leaves all aspects of religious practice or belief to families. West Hartford units contain members of most major religions, including 'none'.

Relationship to Girl Scouts
These programs are under the auspices of the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). Although all BSA programs are open to girls, we are not the Girl Scouts. The Girl Scouts of America are an entirely separate organization, with their own units, structure, and requirements.
